Fodder Industry Experience

Ian Poggioli began producing hay for stock feed in the 1980’s as a bi-product of grass seed production. Ian and his sons have a combined experience of more than 80 years in hay production. Our dedication to the fodder industry has seen us continually develop our knowledge and expertise in hay making.

Part of this development involves investment in modern hay making equipment and techniques. Technology and engineering is constantly evolving to meet new demands and conditions. Having the right equipment for the job means a better product.

PRiMO PRODUCE is committed to producing the best quality fodder as economically as possible so that customers always receive the best value for money.

Hay Varieties

Over the past 25 years a range of tropical grass varieties have been grown for hay and seed production. These varieties include Callide, Katambora and Finecut Rhodes Grass, Gatton and Green Panic, Kazungula Seteria, Signal Grass (Brachiaria), Humidicola to name a few. However, over time one variety has stood apart from all others as an all-round premium stock hay - Finecut Rhodes Grass.

Finecut was selected for breeding by an Australian seed company especially for its fine stem, leafy growth and high dry matter yields which makes it ideal for hay production. This variety is a high quality fodder for horses, cattle, weaners, donkeys, sheep and goats and compares well with oaten hay. While it does not contain the protein levels of legumes such as Lucerne (Alfalfa), Finecut has higher protein than comparative grasses. Please refer to our Finecut Rhodes information sheet for more detailed information.

Reliable Quality and Supply

The Atherton Tableland region of North Queensland is now the largest tropical seed production area in Australia. Consequently, hay production is closely linked with this industry. The Tableland is a key hay production region due to its reliable rainfall, fertile soils and mild climate. While summer is the traditional growing season for Finecut Rhodes, the Poggioli Family produce hay virtually all year round with the aid of irrigation and very mild winters.

As supply and demand is not always concurrent, proper storage of hay is critical. PRiMO PRODUCE has full shed storage for up to 20,000 round bales at any one time.
